You never know what might happen on that extra short hunt...

You never know what might happen on that extra short hunt...

If you could only hunt an hour would you go? I think most would probably say no.

But, we train hard during summer waiting for the Fall flights. It’s a short window and I don’t intend to waste it. So a hunting we went. Short on time, I hurried home from work, grabbed the first carabiner of mallards(5), 2 geese for a little added “pop” to my small spread vibe, a pulsator and we hit the road. And although it was a slow night, with only a handful of wary Mallards that would glide in, just to slide off at the last second….this one did it right. Cupped up rocking back and forth cutting wind as it streaked in from the heavens only to put on the brakes 15 yards off the gun barrel back pedaling whilst announcing his arrival with that classic drake “dweeeet” “dweeet”. The rest is history from there. One shot, one short retrieve.

If I could only hunt one hour with that dog for one duck. Would I go? You bet I’d do it every time. And if that ducks a drake black duck, even better.
